G.ho.st is a website that displays a virtual computer inside a browser. You can log into your account from anywhere to access your saved preferences, files, custom programs etc. Ghost is in early stages and there are other similar services out there. According to the story in BrisbaneTimes a suburban Melbourne start-up that claims to be developing a search engine that improves on Google’s search engine, has captured the attention of the search behemoth.
“MyLiveSearch, which plans to go live as a public beta in a few weeks, is the brainchild of self-taught software developer Rob Gabriel.”
“A Google business development representative has met with the MyLiveSearch team at least twice – once when the technology was at a very early stage, and again last week after Next made inquiries about Google’s interest in the project.”
Unlike conventional computers, there is no keyboard or mouse. More than one person may use the system, simultaneously, with the same input/output device! Microsoft’s new tabletop computers feel like a success! 🙂 See the photos. From a different perspective, it also marks the divergence of a software giant into newer cool things, akin to Apple and iPod/iPhone.

Here’s an interesting coincidence between the share price trend of Microsoft in the 4 years preceding the dot com bust in 2000 and the past 4 years’ share price of Apple. Both increased a little above 900% in the respective periods (see figures below). In the four years following the bust, Microsoft’s share price fell more than 50% (see second figure). What’s going to happen to Apple (and the entire economy)? It is by no means a conclusive comparison as there are a multitude of factors that have resulted in the present state of market and that will define the course of Apple in future. For now, Apple is going strong with its sales and looking hopeful with its upcoming products. An interesting comparison though.

In the wake of recent happenings in the blogger world I could not resist the feeling of awe regarding the power electronic blogs have amassed. On May 1st Digg tried to suppress stories about an HD-DVD code which created significant turbulence at Digg and resulted in Digg owner having to give his opinion about the matter. Yesterday (May 15th), another turmoil was caused by an ‘accidental’ deletion of a post at Flickr regarding the selling of a user’s photographic material by an ebay store without her permission. This once again had to be handled by the owner of Flickr. Elsewhere, an Engadget story claiming that the release of Apple’s iPhone and Leaopard operating system was being delayed (as mentioned in an internal email to Apple employees) resulted in a sudden drop of Apple’s share price which wiped $4 bil off Apple’s market cap. This story was later reverted by Engadget in light of Apple’s notification that the email was a hoax. These incidents are just to name a few.
It seems blogs have surpassed the status Newspapers and TV held a few years ago, with the positive side being that unlike the latter, power has shifted in the hands of the common person. World is becoming a more democratic place, perhaps!
