Exploring photos in 3D

Photo Tourism is a project by Microsoft and Washington University in which a 3D model of a scene is generated from various arbitary picures of the same scene/monument and then allows the user to browse through the contributing pictures using the 3D model. See a live demo on the website (link below). Also see a working prototype called PhotoSynth.

ODF + PDF vs. OpenXML + XPS?

With the hot standards battle for document formats, which one is your fav.? I’m betting on PDF since it is well understood, supported by tools like LaTeX and LyX; and ODF for new docs, which in turn can easily be converted to PDF. No more .doc, .xls, .ppt, .lwp, .123, .prz, .swx, .sxc, .sxi etc. Nice! Pervasiveness of MS tools may mean OpenXML + XPS is the new standard, but replacing PDF will be tough!

Synergy and tools

Every so often there’s a tool that makes your life so much easy that you forgot you’re using it. Like many software developers, I have ended up with two different machines on my desk. One WinXP, the other Linux. Synergy is one tool that can make my life so much more easy.

One keyboard, one mouse to control two different machines, and different operating systems.

iPhone… wow!

I quickly discounted the new Apple iPhone launched this week as the latest fad; clearly I was wrong. After seeing Mr. Showman’s keynote there is little doubt that iPhone’s technological innovation, product innovation and business model innovation has great potential. However there are few not-so-impressive things: slow web traffic, limited choice of service providers, no third party apps and $499 price tag. (Btw, AAPL stock is all-time high at $94.62 today, up from $86.37 before the keynote!). iPhone – it’s everything 🙂
